Opening Sequence Research

This is an opening sequence of the film 'Quantum of Solace' which is the same genre as our opening sequence and has influenced our ideas on the plot of our project. 'Quantum of Solace' is a good example of an Action film. There is a good chase scene in this sequence which has some good close ups to show who is chasing who and how fast the actors are driving. This sequence has given us some ideas for the shots that we can do as in our opening sequence we are making a chase scene as well. The sequence has a concept edit at the beginning which shows the river with a bridge and looks like someone is moving along the river and then it cuts to the cars chasing each other at a very fast speed. It has also a wobbly bit which indicates how fast they are really driving. The sequence is organised very well and it underlines the genre of the film very effectively. Our opening sequence is inspired by this one as we thought that we could do something good creating a chase scene that would show how well we can create something.

Shoot day- Number 1 18/12/13

We planned to shoot the first part of our opening sequence on wednesday, we had all the equipment set up when one of our actors called saying they weren't able to attend, we had to cancel the shoot.
We found our main actor Josh quite unreliable and not dedicated enough to our project, so we decided that we would have to replace him. We are currently looking to replace our main actor, this is only a minor setback as we have replacements and we are prepared to make up the missing time in our spare time. This also means that we have to change the location we were going to begin filming, as we needed to use the actors house for our opening sequence.

Audience Research- Focus Group

We briefed our primary audience of teenage boys about our ideas for our film. Overall they really liked our idea and liked our creative thinking, however they thought that the idea was quite unrealistic and unsure if it would actually be believable. We also found out that our target audeince preference of film genre is mostly comedy and action, we were satisfied by that result as our film is an action film. Most of our audience said that they would go to watch our film in the cinema but would not recommend it to friends after they had watched it and made sure it was a good film. This audience research has been very helpful for us as it has made us understand our target audience more. Our secondary target audeince is women aged 14- 30.

                                                                     Caution

EXIT FRONT DOOR - ANDY'S HOUSE

ANDY (wearing checkered shirt, jeans, glasses, and trainers, holding school books) leaves house to go school.

                                                  ANDY (present self voice over)
This is where it all began, it was just a normal day. I was a boy that was never noticed, never seen.

                                                                    (Music plays)

                                                   ANDY(present self voice over)
Everyday was the same i woke up, planned to meet with my friend and went to school. But that day, that day was different. Everyday these guys picked on me, you could actually say that these bullies ruined my life, but maybe….in this case they saved it……
This is when everything changed.

Costumes and props

Costumes:

Andy/ Main character: blue checkered shirt, jeans, trainers and glasses - we have chosen this clothing for andy because we wanted his character to represent a defenceless, geeky teenager and we thought that these clothing items really help us to show that on film.

Shalom and Mitchell/ Bullies: Hooded coat, jeans and trainers - these clothing items are used to represent a stereotypical black youth who you might associate from an area like Mitcham or Croydon. This is also a stereotypical look for a bully.

Props:

Books: The books are used to help portray that our character played by andy is a geeky teenager who likes to read and study.

Bin: for Andy to jump over. This is going to be an obstacle that andy is going top have to jump over to try and avoid being caught by the bullies. We chose this prop because most action films have chases where the characters have to try and avoid obstacles, and because it is the most relevant to the setting of opening scene.

Phone: the phone is used for Andy to receive a text from his friend, which alters the journey he takes to school.

Schoolbag: The bag is used for Andy to put his school books inside.

Locations

Our location is St. James close, we decided on this location because it is easy to get to as well as having a caution electricity box in it that we would be able to use for our opening sequence.

Plot Idea

Our plot idea is an action film, inspired by the TV series Misfits and the films Kickass and Spiderman.
In out opening sequence we have decided to do a chase scene as this is one of the codes and conventions of an action film. By doing this it will signify to the audience that it is an action film therefore tying them into the film. In the scene our main character, Josh, walks out of his house and is then met by school bullies who chase him down the street. Josh is then cornered by the bullies who push him into an electricity box, the box explodes which gives him powers but you don't know that yet.  When it explodes the bullies ran away and he is left lying on the floor. For a moment you think that he hasn't survived the explosion as the sound of his heartbeat is fading away until he opens his eyes and the scene ends and the title of the film 'Caution' shows.

Team Meeting 1 and 2

In this image we are discussing some of the plot ideas we could come up with for our opening scene.

Meeting 1- Brainstorm
In this meeting we discussed our ideas for our opening sequence and came up with a range of potential story lines for a variation of different genres. We also came up with the characters and locations we could use for each of our created ideas. This is our brainstorm:

Meeting 2- Storyboard
In this meeting we decided on what plot we wanted to do and started to storyboard our ideas. In this image we have structured out a rough copy of our storyboard , and have labelled the types of angles and shots were going to use for each scene.
